Paper Excellence B.V. has sold German-based Papierfabrik Scheufelen GmbH + Co. KG (“Scheufelen”) to a business consortium led by the Schaeff Group located in SchwaebischHall, Germany, following a strategic decision to return focus to its pulp activities.
Scheufelen is a traditional paper mill operating since 1855 in Lenningen near Stuttgart. It is a producer of high quality coated paper and is the European market leader for coated pre-mium papers. Last year Scheufelen generated a turnover of €91 million and had 340 employees. Production of high quality board for the packaging industry will continue under the Phoenolux brand. Phoenolux is used in luxury packaging for cosmetics, pharmaceutical & healthcare products, alcohol, jewelry, watches and electronic devices.
Alexander Schaeff, managing partner of the Schaeff Group, called the acquisition of Scheufelen a logical step in the expansion of Schaeff: “Scheufelen is a leading manufacturer of premium coated papers for the graphical sector and its recent advances in providing the highest quality surfaces in the packaging sector suits the strategic intentions of the Schaeff Group”.
Established in 1596, the Schaeff Group is a family-run enterprise focused on specialty machinery, which has been looking to enter new markets in packaging and packaging technology. In addition to the Schaeff Group, the buyer consortium consists of RADIAL Capital Partners, a Munich-based investment company specialized in corporate spin-offs, as well as Ulrich Scheufelen, the Honorary Chairman and a member of the Scheufelen family.
The realignment of the Scheufelen paper mill to produce premium packaging board in addition to graphical papers will be continued by the new shareholders. The company will be supported by industry experts from Mirow & Co. with Andreas Mirow, formerly head of Pulp & Paper Global at McKinsey & Co.
“I am happy that the Scheufelen paper mill is part of a medium-sized group of companies again. I also would like to show my sincere appreciation to the Paper Excellence Group who has been a very supportive shareholder throughout its ownership of the mill”, stated Ulrich Scheufelen who has welcomed the change of ownership.
Paper Excellence has seven pulp mills in Canada and two pulp mills in France. In 2011, Scheufelen was acquired to expand its paper production activities. Paper Excellence will now return its focus on pulp production and has now completely withdrawn from paper production following the exit from Papierfabrik Scheufelen.
